GeoRabble Tas #8 is being held on the 14th of September, 2017

GeoRabble Tas #8

Hey everybody, this is a rather belated post to let you know that there’s a GeoRabble coming up in Tasmania this week!

We’ve got three great presenters, plus a secret presenter who will be revealed on the night. (No, it’s not just disorganisation, we really do have something special for you!)

The event is being held at the Republic Bar in North Hobart on Thursday the 14th of September from 5 pm until 7 pm.

Here’s a big register button to make it super easy.

Eventbrite - GeoRabble Tas #8

We look forward to seeing you there, but please, don’t forget to register!

Presenter Details:

Anna Riddel: Measuring Earth’s ‘wiggle’: A journey to the centre

Our Earth is a dynamic planet and in response to mass moving across its surface, it cannot help but give a little wiggle. The Earth is not flat, but neither is it round and there are processes that change the shape and surface of the Earth on timescales that range from daily to decadal to millennial. Accurately pinpointing a location with a positioning system like GPS, or measuring changes in global sea level are only done relative to Earth’s centre. But herein lies the problem, we can’t physically get to the centre ourselves to see where it is or how its movement is changing over time.

Dylan Colson: What’s New in Hydrography?

There are exciting developments in Hydrography both locally and internationally on the horizon. One of the most exciting new technologies, Autonomous Surface Vehicles, are becoming more widespread, so where does this leave the role of the hydrographer? Confined to the role of data processor and QC? In fact, with the new HydroScheme Industry Partnership Program (or HIPP) currently in the early stages of planning, the role of a qualified, certified and professional hydrographic surveyors is now more important than ever.

Anthony OFlaherty: System of Systems

TasWater’s Asset Management Systems are crucial to the effective management of what is a complex web of geographically disperse assets. These systems include GIS, SCADA, Enterprise Historian, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) & CAD. This presentation will provide an operational context of those systems and outline key strategic initiatives that will future proof our operating model, ultimately driving better outcomes for all Tasmanians.

Special Surprise Guest: who could it be?!

Thanks to our sponsors, Konect and Insight GIS!

Speakers Announcement for GeoRabble Sydney

Bring your brain in curious mode, and gather together with your fellow GeoRablers  from all parts of the community this Thursday for some good times, brain food and friends.

This week we have a couple of new presenters and some familiar ones as well, followed by a panel session where you control the action just like a day at Jamberoo.

Joshua Soo – Stepping into the Future with Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a creative and human-centered problem solving methodology that is fast becoming the way start-ups and established organisations innovate and tackle challenges.

Maryse Fantin – Global Trends and what it means for future tech

Technology reflects ourselves: our needs and wants; our mindset and culture. Based on the NIC Global Trends, this is a summary with my view on what’s to come.

Luke Metcalfe – Does a Data Scientist Belong on your Geo Team?

What Data Scientists do, pitfalls of working with them and how they can help in the geospatial world.

Francisco Urbina – VR, AR and MR and the Location Community

VR, AR and MR, what is the difference? Why should we care? We take a look at the trends and hopefully inspire you to grasp the potential.

Panel Session moderated by Elise Mckenna.

Our MC for the evening will see the welcome return of Tim Leigh

Thanks to all our volunteer speakers who give up their time and knowledge for the benefit of the community and hope you also appreciate the great line up of topics and speakers for this week’s GeoRabble, so hurry up and get your tickets.

GeoRabble Perth #18 gets into the swing of fringe

On the back of local Fringeworld action in Perth in February, Perth’s geo-community and new friends got together for the first time in 2017 for Georabble Perth #18 – The Fringe Edition.

After local regular MC Nick Flett @mapguy83 recapped our rules of engagement – Dhan Prabu kicked-off the night by exploring Perth beers, BBQs and a bizzilion other curiosities with ‘Maps with a Twist’.

Next-up, Suzanne Browne from a certain local water utility (see what I did there) asked us to re-think Perth’s drainage reserves as usable space. Suzanne shared some great examples of ‘re-greening’ what were formerly a bunch of wet holes in in the ground. Like all great things – so obvious!

For a change of pace – Tom Lynch from our generous sponsor for the night, Amristar – turned spatial (and our heads) inside out. Tom brought us a whole new vocabulary with #eventsourcing and #eventingestion. A bunch of new tricks to squeeze more out of big(ish) data.

And to wrap things-up for the night, newcomer to Georabble, Santino (not the Godfather guy) Vitale shared his start-up journey with ‘What Transpired’. It turns out plants are not just for decoration – they make great chemical samplers if you know how to read them.

That’s a wrap for Georabbleper #18.

We can’t hold these events without the help of the greater Geocommunity! Please contact us if you’ve got a story to share over a few beers, or can help us pay for those beers and a bite to eat, or can help this rabble get itself organised!

This event brought was you by the Perth GeoRabble team and proudly sponsored by Amristar.

Stay tuned via #georabbleper for news about our next event coming up soon.

Carl Steinitz GeoDesign Lecture, Sydney 30 November

All are welcome to attend a public lecture on Geodesign by Carl Steinitz on November 30th, 5:30-7:30, at the EY Building (Level 34), 200 George St, Sydney CBD.

The Geodesign process supports a systems-thinking approach to Sustainable Urban Development decision-making. Supported by GIS applications and visualisation tools, it is driven by information sharing and interaction between stakeholder groups.

Geodesign workshops facilitate stakeholders’ recognition of existing and potential information gaps, as well as the social, environmental, and political complexities of a given study area.

Carl Steinitz is Wiley Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He will be sharing his insights and experience in pioneering the Geodesign process and holding workshops in different parts of the world.
