On the back of local Fringeworld action in Perth in February, Perth’s geo-community and new friends got together for the first time in 2017 for Georabble Perth #18 – The Fringe Edition.
After local regular MC Nick Flett @mapguy83 recapped our rules of engagement – Dhan Prabu kicked-off the night by exploring Perth beers, BBQs and a bizzilion other curiosities with ‘Maps with a Twist’.
Next-up, Suzanne Browne from a certain local water utility (see what I did there) asked us to re-think Perth’s drainage reserves as usable space. Suzanne shared some great examples of ‘re-greening’ what were formerly a bunch of wet holes in in the ground. Like all great things – so obvious!
For a change of pace – Tom Lynch from our generous sponsor for the night, Amristar – turned spatial (and our heads) inside out. Tom brought us a whole new vocabulary with #eventsourcing and #eventingestion. A bunch of new tricks to squeeze more out of big(ish) data.
And to wrap things-up for the night, newcomer to Georabble, Santino (not the Godfather guy) Vitale shared his start-up journey with ‘What Transpired’. It turns out plants are not just for decoration – they make great chemical samplers if you know how to read them.

All are welcome to attend a public lecture on Geodesign by Carl Steinitz on November 30th, 5:30-7:30, at the EY Building (Level 34), 200 George St, Sydney CBD.
The Geodesign process supports a systems-thinking approach to Sustainable Urban Development decision-making. Supported by GIS applications and visualisation tools, it is driven by information sharing and interaction between stakeholder groups.
Geodesign workshops facilitate stakeholders’ recognition of existing and potential information gaps, as well as the social, environmental, and political complexities of a given study area.
Carl Steinitz is Wiley Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He will be sharing his insights and experience in pioneering the Geodesign process and holding workshops in different parts of the world.

We’re super excited to announce our first three speakers for the next Sydney Georabble – Women in Georabble!
We’re still taking speaker submissions so if you have a topic you would like to share – send us an email with the proposed subject at sydney@georabble.org
Around 10% of us are women in the geo industries and the pay gap is widening*.
We’ve noted that the last couple of Sydney Georabble events have been male dominated in the speaker submissions and talks, so this time we want to support, inspire and encourage women to present and put their voice out there!
Although we’re doing an all female line up, EVERYBODY is more than welcome to join us on the night, enjoy the free food (courtesy of Jacobs) and have a beer with us!
